WIS at Australian Gender Equality Council Forum 2019

Women in Super has been a member of the Australian Gender Equality Council (AGEC) since the council’s foundation last year to act as an authoritative, strong voice for gender equality in Australia and to drive change a much faster pace. At the recent AGEC Forum 2019, Women in Super ensured that superannuation without gender bias played an important role in all discussions about gender equity and will be represented in a newly established AGEC manifesto.

Federal Budget 2019 - A WIS Write-Up

Last Tuesday, Treasurer Josh Frydenberg delivered the Federal Budget 2019. While tax cuts seemed a major focus and committing to increasing the Superannuation Guarantee (SG) to 12% in addition to widening the rules around additional voluntary contributions may seem positive moves for superannuation, it was extremely disappointing that the budget did not focus on removing the major structural inequities in the system. Voluntary contributions such as those introduced by the budget are simply out of reach for the majority of working women (and men) and more importantly, are not well targeted nor sustainable.

Four events were organized by Women in Super attracting large audiences.

Event Recap - Financial Wellness and ME

Women in Super really grabbed the new year by the horns, throwing ourselves into a national tour of Financial Wellness and ME sessions, in conjunction with ME, throughout February. Hoping to capitalise on the new year resolutions we all make and never stick to, these sessions were designed to make us think about making good money habits. Taken around the country, and finally wrapping up last week to a sell-out audience in Brisbane, these informative, open discussions left everyone who attended with at least a couple of money-saver tips that will set them up for the new year.

Ask Jane Dharam, Manager Client Strategies and Products with Funds SA, about her very first job in the superannuation industry and her eyes will lighten up: “It was fascinating. My first job was as an investment research analyst, researching companies listed on the Australian Stock Exchange and making recommendations to buy, sell or hold them. There were so many things I loved about the job,” says Jane who was born in Queensland and now lives in Adelaide.
