Future-proofing superannuation with julia angrisano

This year we celebrate 25 years of Women in Super with a National Road Show featuring Julia Angrisano, the National Secretary of the Finance Sector Union and Director of AustralianSuper.

Julia will speak about the challenge of future proofing our Superannuation system to ensure it meets the needs of Australians given the changing models for work and work structures. We’ve already seen an increase in flexible, independent work, a rise in the numbers working in the gig economy and the demise of one job for life. What impact will these structural changes have on retirement incomes and the current Superannuation system? What changes will we need to consider to ensure a dignified retirement for those starting work today and retiring 50 years from now? Will these newer work models become the future and what changes will our Superannuation system need to ensure that today’s young women enjoy retirement incomes in line with their male counterparts? How can we make superannuation and our workplaces not only more equitable but suitable for a rapidly changing workforce?

Julia Angrisano represents the changing face of the union movement today - which is younger, feminised and more diverse than ever before. When Mavis Robertson established Women in Super 25 years ago, Julia was still in high school - and the Spice Girls were redefining what it meant to be successful. Julia will address the challenges facing us all and address how much has really changed in the past 25 years and what we can do to continue the work started by Mavis 25 years ago.

Julia Angrisano is the National Secretary of the Finance Sector Union of Australia and a Director of AustralianSuper, the largest industry superannuation fund in Australia, and a trustee of ACTU Member Connect.

Since becoming the FSU National Secretary in 2016, Julia has led the FSU’S Women’s Agenda and has elevated the issues facing women in the often male-dominated finance industry to the centre of the work undertaken by the FSU. This includes a focus on ameliorating the 30% gender pay gap faced by women in the industry and addressing the complex problem of women’s retirement incomes.
